February In Texas

Hello… Wow how time can fly by you when your not looking! I just realized it has been more than a month since I've last updated the blog.

That is because there really is not much that has changed. We are kind of in a holding pattern now. I work, I come home, we work around the campground, we buy food, we eat and sleep. There really is not much going on in the way of excitement these days.

I really feel for our friends and family in Maine this winter. It has been a rough winter for ya'll and that has only served to make us feel like we really did make the right decision. I try hard not to rub it in on facebook and such, but the weather down here has really helped me feel much better overall. I am not suffering the Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) nearly as much this winter as I have suffered in winters past. Our days here have been in the 60's and 70's with some days almost reaching 80! The nights have been in the 40's and 50's so a little cool but not hard to take. We have not seen a single snow-flake! Again, I'm not trying to rub it in, I am simply reporting what it is that we love about our decision to move south for the winters.

We have secured our position at a campground in Scarborough Maine for the summer. We will be staying and working at the Wild Duck Campground in Scarborough from May 15th until September 20th. We are very happy that we will be centrally located around friends and family. We are looking forward to our return to Maine to see everyone.

Very soon it will be time to start the job search for Maine. That is the hardest part of what we are doing - we have to hit the ground running when we arrive. There is no time for visiting and hanging out. One or both of us have to find work right away and get to making some money. Our time in Texas has been difficult financially, but we have learned some things about what we have to do differently. While we hope to make a good living playing music, we also know that we need something a little more secure than that. Likewise, we have to start looking for gigs for the winter when we are home in the summer.

One of the hard parts of this lifestyle is there are people who come into your life for very short periods of time. We had made some friends from the Chicago area who were our neighbors here for about 2 months. They have moved on to go home. We enjoyed their company and conversations and miss them already. But, we still have face-book to stay in touch with them and someday when we are checking off things we'd like to do from our bucket list, such as traveling down Route 66, we will stop a couple of days in the Chicago area and see them again.

We hope that all our friends and family continue to stay warm and safe in the North-East. We know that it has been a very hard winter for ya'll. While we look forward to seeing everyone and spending time with you, we are pretty convinced that we will not be moving back to Maine. If we were to decide to settle down again, it would be someplace in the south. I am convinced that somehow, although I was born in Maine - that I am truly a southerner…

So we will be departing Texas on April 30th and most likely taking the most direct route to Maryland to spend a few days with my son Jason. We will be enjoying everyone's company in Maine until Sept 20th. We would have been leaving Maine a little sooner than that but our Daughter is getting married and we want to be sure we are there for the wedding. Next winter we are planning on spending in Florida. We were considering Arizona, but have thought that Florida may be a better answer in order to find work playing music which is really want we want to do. That is the beauty of this lifestyle, you can change your mind and do something different.

Well - I'll try to write the next update without such a long lapse of time - but no promises! We are looking forward to seeing everyone soon.

Soaring Eagle…
